TOT
TOONS
An animation project with a difference at
Lowestoft Library, Suffolk. July 2006.
The
Tot Toons project was funded by a local councillor as
part of an initiative to provide unique ICT learning
opportunities to families with very young children in
Lowestoft. The idea was developed by the Sure Start
Librarian and a local film maker.
Shelly
Telly (a Norwich based film maker) was engaged to devise
a series of mini workshops to enable 14 toddlers (and
parents) to produce their own cartoons using a special
software package and graphics tablets with pens and
mini mice. The children were all aged between 2 and
4.

The
project was a first in the animation world and the official
film premier was held on Saturday 29th July at The Ark
Children’s Centre.

Excellent
coverage of the event appeared in the local press with
wonderfully quirky comments:
‘It’s a long way from Hollywood –
but the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese could
well be coming from Lowestoft’ (Eastern Daily
Press, 31.7.06)
Parents
were equally excited:
“I’ve learned that children as young as
3 can use computers and get a lot out of it”
“It’s
the first time I’ve seen anything like this. I
really enjoyed it. My son has learned so much about
computers”
“My
daughter has really enjoyed this. Even at home she says
3,2,1, ACTION”
